Each year at the end of Term 3, performing ensembles disband, and all instrumental students audition for their positions for the next 12 months. Audition music, set by IMSS staff, is available about ten days before auditions. Students, with their teacher's guidance, prepare excerpts that best reflect their ability. Placement is typically based on ability and attitude, not year level or course. Results are posted by the final day of Term 3, allowing panels and directors to review and place students appropriately. Final placement considers audition performance, teacher consultations, ensemble vacancies, and students' social and emotional well-being.
Students unable to attend their audition must contact the School of Music before the scheduled audition. Missed auditions are rescheduled at the panel's convenience, with final placement at the Director of Music's discretion.
